Here we are approaching the 5th anniversary of September 11th, a date that will always be known by itself--not attached to a year--but to a moment in time. I am of course beginning to see images of that day, and once again my breath becomes shallow, my heart beats faster and I weep for those who still morn. But, I look at Ashes and Dust and say yes, I think I said what I needed to say. I've since worked on proposals that spoke to the beauty and strength that would rise from the ashes--but for me--this was that day.

Conceived shortly after 9/11, this piece was a catharsis for me. After waking many nights weeping, I knew I had to find form for my grief. One thing that struck me after the collapse of the Twin Towers was that almost everything there was reduced to ashes and dust--and gaping holes were left where towers and people once had been.
